New ‘safe space’ medical room opens at Heidi’s on Westside

Heidi’s Bier Bar on Broad Street has revealed a brand new ‘safe space’ medical room to help any partygoers who fall ill.

The facility is at the back of the giant venue to make sure that it is as close to an emergency exit as possible.

11 04 24 Westside – Heidi’s Medical Room is opening on April 12, 2024 to help customers who feel unwell for whatever reason. It will have access to Tennant Street via an emergency exit.

If an ambulance is ever needed to attend the apres-ski bar, the paramedics will be able to  park directly outside on Tennant Street, which will avoid causing any traffic delays. You can watch our video of the ‘safe room’ here:

By showing off the medical room in the cold light of day, it’s hoped that customers of all ages will realise they don’t want to end up in there when they should be out enjoying themselves with friends.

But the venue also wants people to understand that the facility is there to give compassionate help to anyone who unexpectedly needs it.

Jamie Whittingham, general manager of Heidi’s Bier Bar, said: “We thought the medical room was something that we could create to help any customer who falls ill on the premises for whatever reason.

“As well as a bed, the medical equipment ranges from plasters, ice packs and wipes to sick bags and bleed kits. The room will also have chairs for friends and it will also be fully monitored by CCTV.

“We have 86 employees here and we train them all, including door staff, to try to look after our customers at all times as if they were their own son or daughter or friend.

“Heidi’s is a big venue with various rooms and customers from late teens to people in their 50s. We often have more than 6,000 patrons per week, so you never know why somebody might be taken ill and require the help of one of our first aiders.

“The idea is to help them to get the best possible care until the ambulance arrives if one is required.

“Of course, sometimes people simply do drink too much – but one reason for that is because some of the post-Covid generation in particular will come out without having eaten properly.

“We had a young man the other week who we simply could not have sent out on to the streets. So do you know what we did? We called his parents and they were very grateful that we did!”

Mike Olley, general manager at Westside BID, said: “Like all Westside venues, Heidi’s takes the care and safety of its patrons very seriously. Safety is always a top concern so we are delighted to support the company’s brilliant initiative.”
