The splendour of Westside BID’s calendar pictures exhibited at The Flapper

A year’s supply of fabulous photos is going on display on Westside.

Talented amateur snappers are regularly out and about in the Broad Street and the Brindleyplace areas taking photographs of all that is interesting and attractive about the district.

They responded with enthusiasm, and no little talent, to an appeal from Westside BID for images to appear in an annual calendar, with the first issue being published last year.

Now a collection of the winning photographs that make up this year’s 2023 calendar are to be displayed at The Flapper pub in Kingston Row for two weeks.

The stunning exhibition, which is free to view, will be unveiled at the pub from 5pm to 7pm on Monday 7 August, with guests able to enjoy drinks and nibbles during the event.

The winning photos featured in this year’s BID calendar were taken by people of all ages and from all walks of life, but who share a common passion for photography.

Westside’s colourful and attractive canalside area was heavily represented in the calendar, but other outstanding images include Ozzy the ‘Raging Bull’ featured in last year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and the ever-changing city centre landscape.

Each of the photographers chosen by judges to have their work included in the calendar received a vouchers to spend on Westside – as well as the honour of now having their images displayed in public.

Westside BID said the exhibition was a way to celebrate the photographer’s work and display it to the general public.

Media and communications manager Luisa Huggins said: “This is a great way to showcase the beautiful sites located in Westside.

“We were thrilled to have an overwhelming number of entries, and we are looking forward to this event. The food at The Flapper is great also, so attendees will be in for a treat.”

The overall winner of the 2023 calendar was retired dentist Damien Walmsley, whose striking image of a canalside reflection also represented the month of April.

The other photographers featured are: Chris Fletcher, Tony Wallbank, Sandeep Tewari (who appears twice), Peter Leadbetter, Lili Lengkana, who was last year’s overall winner, Elliott Brown, Meetu Varshney, Carl Thornley, Jack Babington, and Luke Groves.
