Westside’s Commonman Games opened last night (it’s NOT the Commonwealth Games!)

The Commonman Games opening ceremony kicked off last night in the Walkabout bar on Broad Street.

The fun events for the general public to enjoy may well soon have to be called the unCommonman Games, following a threat of legal action by strict officials from the Commonwealth Games. But despite the needless fuss from those officials, Westside BID’s general manager Mike Olley welcomed the crowd and contestants which included staff from Heidi’s Bar and Broadway Plaza.

Mr Olley said: “It’s a lovely thing to do and to welcome to our great city, in what is a great sporting epoch.”

Westside BID’s chairman Gerald Manton announced the different games that will take place over the next couple of weeks, including Beer pong, Cashgrabber and Football Darts.

He said: “It’s a bit of fun for the public to enjoy.”

Mr Manton thanked all the venues who are taking part, Elaine Weir, the business liaison manager at Westside BID for organising the event, and Flamingo Events who supplied the games.

He then officially marked the Commonman Games as open and added: “Come on down, have a go, and enjoy the games.”

Tom, a member of staff at Walkabout gave visitors an insight into the venue and encouraged people to visit during the Commonwealth Games.

He said Walkabout was “a sporting environment” for the public to enjoy sports with a total of “52 TVs, two projectors, and four Sky boxes, to put on any sports”.

Tom added: “Our facilities will be very important with the upcoming Commonwealth Games.”

Those who attended the Commonman Games ceremony took part in the Cash Grabber game, and had loads of fun.
