New exhibition of world’s smallest micro art opens on Westside

A Westside art gallery is hosting an exhibition of what has been described as the world’s most complex micro art ever created.

Willard’s World of Wonder is displaying 25 sculptures by Dr Willard Wigan that are so tiny they can only be seen through microscopes.

The permanent exhibition is open to the public from 23 July at Birmingham Contemporary Art Gallery in the Utilita Arena Birmingham Complex on Sheepcote Street.

Dr Willard Wigan is a world-renowned British sculptor who makes microscopic art. His sculptures are typically placed in the eye of a needle or on the head of a pin. Looking through a microscope, a single sculpture can be as small as 0.005mm.

Mike Olley, general manager of Westside BID, said: “What a treat it is to have Dr Willard Wigan’s fantastic art for such a long-running exhibition here on Westside.

“This is yet another reason to draw families to Westside, and I can guarantee they will not be disappointed.”

To mark the opening of the exhibition, Westside BID videographer Jas Sansi has interviewed the artist and some of the first visitors to the exhibition, and this can be viewed here:
