The music charity behind Westside’s Symphony Hall has unveiled a new partnership with the UK recording studios made famous by The Beatles.
B:Music has teamed up with the Abbey Road Studios and its annual Abbey Road Music Photography Awards, which were formed in 2022.
The month-long programme centres around an exhibition of the winning and shortlisted images from Abbey Road’s 2023 Music Photography Awards, taking place at Symphony Hall from Monday 13 May to Friday 14 June.
There will also be a series of masterclasses, live music, panel discussions and more. The photography awards champion emerging and undiscovered young photographers while celebrating the unforgettable, unique, and unsung musical moments from the previous year.
Across nine categories, ranging from ‘Live’ and ‘ICON’ to ‘Undiscovered’, the exhibition in the B:Eats café at Symphony Hall will offer a unique opportunity to view the photographs in a distinctive setting.
A series of masterclasses and panel talks, led by local, established music photographers and Music Photography Awards alumni will also be running across the month, plus special performances from local and emerging Birmingham- based musicians.
The pinnacle will be on Friday 24 May when the B:Music Talent Development Showcase takes over the regular Free Jazz Fridays slot, and the young photographers from the Abbey Road Music Photography Awards programme will be there in attendance to snap the performances.
Sally Davies, managing director of Abbey Road Studios, which became the world’s first purpose-built recording studio when it opened in 1931, said: “I couldn’t be more thrilled to extend the reach of our Music Photography Awards beyond the doors of Abbey Road Studios and into the heart of Birmingham.
“It’s a testament to our desire to celebrate creativity and culture throughout the UK and I’m excited to witness the fusion of music and visual art in this dynamic city.”
Chris Proctor, head of programming at B:Music, said: “The opportunity for two iconic organisations to work together to champion talent both on and off stage was too good to miss.
“We’re delighted that the next generation of music photography creatives and musicians will have the chance to swap and exchange experiences throughout the month-long residency at Symphony Hall.”
