A ‘well-travelled’ Westside restaurant has won the coveted title of ‘Best of Brum’ in a national award celebrating all that is good about the UK dining industry.
The prestigious British Restaurant Awards, held last week in London, named Indo-Persian eatery Qavali in Brindleyplace as the best restaurant in the whole of Birmingham.
Qavali, which celebrates its second birthday in November, emerged victorious from a shortlist of ten Birmingham restaurants including neighbouring Brindleyplace dining venue Piccolino.
It was also up against three of the city’s five Michelin star holders.
Qavali, which offers afternoon tea as well as brunches, stews, curries and kebabs, says ‘every serving of food’ has travelled the same path as qawwali music – a form of Sufi Islamic devotional singing that originated in the 13th century.
Such a journey crosses over the mountains of Iran and Turkey, the plains of Afghanistan, and the fields of India and Pakistan, it adds.
A spokesperson for Qavali said: “We are very passionate about our culture and food and telling the story of the Persian Empire around the world.
“Opening the restaurant almost two years ago is a way for us to showcase our heritage.”
She added that qawwali music originates from Ancient Persia.
Qavali was nominated for the British Restaurant Awards, which began five years ago, by their guests.
The spokesperson said: “We are delighted to have this recognition and have utmost gratitude to our cherished guests. Every week we are trying something new.”
The annual British Restaurant Awards took place on 5 September at at Porchester Hall, London, with a range of categories from Best New Restaurant to Best Chef, as well as selected regional awards.
A spokesman said: “This year’s awards paid tribute to the UK’s rich culinary tapestry, recognising both emerging and established names.
“Winners were chosen after a meticulous selection process, underscoring the dedication, passion, and innovation they bring to the UK’s culinary scene.”
