A special evening celebrating stalwart TV presenter Bob Warman’s 50-year screen career was enjoyed by hundreds of his fans at The Rep theatre last night.
The one-off Night of Stars featured famous faces, music and comedy in a show hosted by comedian Jasper Carrott, as he joined Bob in revisiting stars and highlights from his extensive career.
Journalist and newsreader Bob retired last July after his career which included spells with the Birmingham Post & Mail and television in Yorkshire, before an unbroken 40-year stint with Central.
Celebrity surprises included broadcaster Chris Tarrant, singer Tony Christie and comedian Bobby Davro, while former TV sports presenter Gary Newbon also took his turn at treading the boards.
Llewela Bailey, one of Bob’s favourite news presenter partners from the past, also popped up on stage. Llewela, now a university lecturer and chair of the Birmingham Press Club, said: “What a fabulous evening! It’s been a real party!”
Susan Gower was in the audience and tweeted her pleasure after the show: “What a great evening. Bob deservedly must feel very loved. We really enjoyed it and appreciated everyone that entertained us, especially Tony Christie and Bobby Davro.”
All proceeds from the show are going to The Journalist’s Charity – founded by Charles Dickens in 1864 to support journalists and their families through tough times – and Birmingham’s Acorns Children’s Hospice.
