Gym enthusiasts on Westside have been busy donating calories as well as burning them off.
Members of The Gym Group site, at Broadway Plaza on Broad Street, have been regularly donating food items in support of a local food bank charity.
Together with several other Gym Group premises across Birmingham, they have been bringing in non-perishable foodstuffs, from cans of soup to cereal packets, before working out on the gym equipment.
The donations are then collected from Broadway Plaza and neighbouring gyms every three months before being delivered to Feedo Needo, based at Smithfield House in Digbeth.
Danika Neal, general manager of The Gym Club Birmingham Broad Street, said: “We have been supporting Feedo Needo for just over a year, so this will be our second Christmas.
“I have led the partnership with the food bank and reached out to them initially from Broad Street, but later felt there was an opportunity to take it further across all our sites.
“As a company, we wanted to work closely with our community and, because of Covid, there is an even greater need now for food banks.”
Danika said the eight Gym Club sites in the Birmingham area actively encourage their members to donate items of food in special collecting baskets.
She added: “Our members have been really supportive of the scheme and recognise there is a growing need to help food banks.
“Every quarter we take what we’ve collected to Feedo Needo. The food bank is held every Friday, but they also have their Arabica Café which is open daily for the homeless and people in need to get a hot drink and something to eat.”
