A rare evening combining the big England v Wales World Cup match plus live rhythm and blues hits Westside’s top independent music and sports bar this coming Tuesday.
Jenny Wren & Her Borrowed Wings had long been booked for the regular Henry’s Blueshouse session at Velvet Music Rooms on Broad Street for Tuesday 29 November.
And so when organisers realised it would clash with the World Cup match, they faced a mini dilemma: should they cancel the live music or somehow run both together.
Jim Simpson, the former Black Sabbath manager who organises Henry’s Blueshouse via Big Bear Music, said: “The only answer in my book was to give Velvet’s customers a unique treat of World Cup glory and quality music mixed together.
“We’ve simply adjusted the timings of the band’s sessions so that everyone will enjoy every hit they will bring to the stage without missing a minute of football.”
The programme at Velvet on Tuesday now looks like this:
- 6.15pm – Jenny Wren & Her Borrowed Wings
- 7pm – England vs Wales, first half
- 7.45 – Jenny Wren & Her Borrowed Wings
- 8pm – England vs Wales, second Half
- 8.45 – (approximately) Jenny Wren & Her Borrowed Wings
Dani Hadley, co-owner of Velvet, said: “We just love having Jim Simpson helping us to arrange our live music nights at Velvet every Sunday, with Birmingham Rocks, and every Tuesday, with Henry’s Blueshouse.
“With 18 screens – including the biggest one in the Midlands – there was no way we were going to disappoint all the football fans who have come to love our live sport.
“But thanks to Jim, we’ve come up with a way to make both the football and the blues a major success for everyone who turns up – and we’re expecting a big crowd!”
Jenny Wren & Her Borrowed Wings is a band made up of three gifted and imaginative musicians, with Jenny Trilsbach delivering powerful, emotional vocals and double bass, backed by Ben Gallon and Ben Fisher on guitars.
They deliver what’s been described by Aldora Records as: “A jazzed-up bombardment of rootsy musicianship that effortlessly intertwines with their stripped back earthy core, resulting in a unique and impassioned sound, laid bare and beautiful in its honesty.”
Henry’s Blues House at Velvet Music Rooms is free to enter, but customers need to arrive early to get a good space – although with all those screens to watch, no-one will miss any of the football. More venue details at www.velvetmusicrooms.co.uk.
