Westside Book Club preparing to turn the page of its first meeting

A new literary chapter is opening on Westside next week with the first meeting of a new book club aimed at avid readers among the bustling area’s workforce.

Westside Business Improvement District (BID) has created its own Westside Book Club as part of its aim to support the enjoyment and well-being of its employees.

The first gathering of the book club will now take place at Jonathans restaurant and tearoom in The Roundhouse, in Sheepcote Street, on Thursday 6 July from 12 noon, when attendees will receive complimentary books and refreshments.

This will be followed 10 days later with a ‘Meet the Author’ session involving writer Paul Finch at The Brasshouse on Broad Street on Sunday 16July at 2pm.

Paul is best-known as a crime novelist, but the Westside Book Club is being introduced to a new historical novel called Usurper under his new writing name of P W Finch.

Everyone joining the new book club will receive a free copy of Usurper, which is set around the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066 and has been described “a blood-soaked epic”.

Westside BID Business Liaison manager Elaine Weir said: “We are looking forward to this event, and I’m sure attendees will enjoy what we have planned for them.

“Paul is a great writer, and we are honoured to be able to work with him in this way.”

Book club members will attend the July 6 event at The Roundhouse to discuss the novel, copies of which were handed to them last week, before the follow-up meeting with the author himself on July 16.

Copies of further new novels will be given to book club members free of charge in the future.

Ms Weir added: “Westside BID is organising the book club as one of its ways of helping people working in the area to meet like-minded people and to enjoy reading and discussing books together.”
