Free Radio spotlight on Westside becoming fans’ favourite place to watch World Cup

The surge of fans watching World Cup matches at venues across Westside was the focus of a news report on Free Radio this week.

Westside BID chair Gerald Manton described how the tournament had proved a boost for venues, particularly for matches on Sundays and early in the week when bars are often relatively quiet.

Mr Manton said: “It is simply buzzing and people have really took to the games.”

Free Radio also interviewed Dani Hadley, co-owner of Velvet Music Rooms, which has 18 screens for fans to watch every World

Cup match, including one giant 4×2 metre screen thought to be the biggest in the West Midlands.

Ms Hadley described how having the World Cup in Qatar in December rather than the summer months had provided a further boost.

She said: “The response is equally as good, if not better, than the summer tournament. I just think it’s been a welcome opportunity for people to escape the cost-of-living crisis, the drab weather outside and just completely immerse themselves in the pinnacle of football entertainment.”
