Audiences looking forward to the world premiere of a new stage play on Westside have been given this sneak preview.
Withnail and I is currently in rehearsal at The Rep in Centenary Square before running at the theatre from 3 May until 25 May.
These newly released images show the play’s main stars – Robert Sheehan as Withnail and Adonis Siddique as Marwood, or ‘I’, preparing for the opening night.
Withnail and I is The Rep’s new stage adaptation of Bruce Robinson’s 1987 British tragi-comedy film, which starred Richard E Grant and Paul McGann.
The play is directed by The Rep’s artistic director Sean Foley, who has just announced that he will be leaving the theatre after five years following the production.
Withnail and I follows the fortunes of two young unemployed actors, the flamboyant, boozy Withnail, and the shy, contemplative Marwood, who live in utter squalor in a flat in Camden Town, praying for a job.
Their only visitor is their drug dealer, Danny; their only expeditions are to the local pubs; and their only friends each other. Needing a break from the atrocious state of their acting careers, they hit upon the idea of a holiday in the country, and borrow the cottage owned by Withnail’s wealthy Uncle Monty.
However, they soon find that escaping London is not the answer to reinvigorating their addled brains and kick-starting their professional fortunes.
