VIDEO: Westside’s wardens mount two-day blitz on graffiti

Unsightly ‘graffiti’ on Broad Street has been removed during an intensive two-day blitz by Westside street wardens.

The daubings were nothing like as invasive as in other parts of central Birmingham – and Westside BID is determined to keep it that way.

Our video shows our wardens busily cleaning up the doors of 100 Broad Street:

Westside BID operates a proactive zero-tolerance policy when it comes to anti-social behaviour, as previous prosecutions for various offences have illustrated.

The area is covered by a Public Space Protection Order as well as by a multitude of CCTV cameras which operate as part of the BID’s commitment to keep the area safe for visitors on a 24/7 basis.

Wardens used special chemicals and hot water to remove the scribbles from doors, walls, lampposts, phone boxes and bins.

Mike Olley, general manager for Westside BID, said: “We have a zero tolerance approach to so-called graffiti in the city’s main entertainment district.

“The last thing we need is for anti-social behaviour to spoil the environment for the vast majority of law abiding citizens who, by enjoying living, working and playing in the Westside area, contribute to the overall economy.

“The Broad Street area is also a gateway to the city centre so we can be the first area that international visitors and potential lifetime investors see when they are arriving.

“Having survived Covid and the time it took to build the Metro tramline along the repaved Broad Street, the BID is determined to continue its role as a shining beacon of the powers of civic responsibility and pride.

“We keep on top of unwanted ‘graffiti’ before it becomes a problem and would kindly ask any would-be perpetrators of wanton vandalism to consider a career in art for the good of all.

“Birmingham has many examples of brilliant graffiti murals – and nobody complains when it is done well and in the right, fully approved place.

“But the message for anybody wanting to come here and deface any public property willy nilly is that we are watching you and will not hesitate to pass on our evidence to the police where appropriate.”
