Belly Laughs await to be tickled at The Distillery this Friday

A comedy night out, good food, a pint of beer, and a donation to a deserving local charity – it’s all on offer during the same event at a restaurant and bar on Westside.

The Distillery in Sheepcote Street is hosting a special evening of stand-up on 19 January as part of the Belly Laughs comedy festival, which pairs hilarious acts with delicious food in the name of supporting independent businesses and raising money for charity.

For an added element of surprise, the comedians are kept secret until the night itself, so audiences can expect a mix of well-known comics and exciting up-and-coming acts.

Previous stand-up stars, all of whom offer their time for free, include Jon Richardson, Abi Clarke, John Robins, Jayde Adams and Joe Wilkinson.

Tickets to attend the comedy evening at The Distillery on 19 January, from 7pm to 10pm, cost £30, which includes a pint of beer, house wine or a soft drink on arrival, a main meal, and hilarious stand-up.

In addition, £10 from every ticket sale supports SIFA Fireside, Birmingham’s homelessness support service which help people experiencing, or at risk of homelessness, to rebuild their lives by providing them with access to prevention, intervention and recovery services.

The main course consists of a choice of:

  • 1) Pulled lamb shawarma, garlic yogurt, mint, onion, salad, flatbread & fries.
  • 2) Buttermilk chicken burger, fennel & celery slaw, red onion jam & fries.
  • 3) Vegan cheeseburger, lettuce, pickle, onion, burger sauce & fries

The Belly Laughs comedy festival will be taking place across nearly 30 independent pubs and restaurants in Birmingham, which also includes The Flapper pub, in Kingston Row, also on 19 January at 7pm. More details on that venue’s event here.

Belly Laughs serves as a ‘lucky dip’ comedy potluck. Festival-goers might get to see a well-known comedian, such as Russell Howard or local stand-up performer Joe Lycett, or a rising star on the comedy circuit.

It has raised more than £170,000 for local and grassroots charities since it began in 2018.

Proceeds from the Belly Laughs Birmingham pop-up comedy gigs will go to SIFA Fireside, which tackles homelessness in Birmingham by providing essential social and health services.

The charity’s CEO, Natalie Allen, said: “Belly Laughs is such a great initiative and we are very fortunate to have it in Birmingham.”
