Brindleyplace wins green travel accreditation from city council

The first stage of a green travel accreditation has been awarded to Brindleyplace by Birmingham city council.

The mixed-used estate is now considered ‘Green/Approved’ in what’s known as the Modeshift STARS Travel Plan, a five-step scheme to recognise an organisation’s commitment to providing sustainable travel for employees and visitors.

Councillor Liz Clements, the city council’s cabinet member for transport, presented the award to Matt Long, the senior asset manager for Praxis at Brindleyplace, during a Travelwise Week breakfast meeting.

Mr Long explained how Brindleyplace has excellent public transport, walking and cycling connections and is accessible from all over the city.

There are also great facilities on site which support sustainable travel such as cycle storage, both in many of the office buildings and externally across the estate, plus electric vehicle charging stations.

Brompton bikes, West Midlands Cycles and Beryl e-bikes and scooters are also available for hire, while electric maintenance buggies help to reduce reliance on fossil fuels for visitors, tenants and staff.

Multiple buses are routed by Brindleyplace and the Metro stops right outside the estate on Broad Street.

Mr Long said: “We have worked hard to make sure that Brindleyplace is easily accessible to everyone, and we continue to invest significantly in the buildings and public realm to ensure those who want to use public transport or cycle to the estate are able to do so.

“Many of the office buildings have showers and changing facilities and tenants are kept up to date about public travel options via the Brindley Life App.

“By adopting a Green Travel Plan we intend to maximise on the fantastic public transport network around Brindleyplace and improve facilities for everyone who works on or visits the estate.”

Mel Cannell, principal travel demand management officer at the city council said: “The Brindleyplace team is doing fantastic work to ensure active and sustainable travel is the best option for people working, visiting or living in the area.

“By participating in the Modeshift STARS scheme, the team is able to build on the work they are already doing, identify aims for the future and continue contributing to a reduction in air pollution levels and congestion.”
