On stage soon: ‘when to be a wife was success, and anything else was failure’

With five daughters to get married, Mrs Bennett is determined for them to catch the eyes of two rich gentlemen who have just moved into town.

That’s the genesis of the story behind Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice, which The Crescent theatre is bringing to the stage on Westside next month.

A spokesperson for The Crescent said: “In a period when a woman’s one possible career is matrimony, to be a wife was success and anything else was failure.

“Mrs Bennett is determined to get her five daughters married. But love, as Jane and Elizabeth Bennett soon discover, is rarely straightforward.

“It’s only a matter of time until their own small worlds are turned upside down and they discover that first impressions can be the most misleading of all.”

The Crescent Theatre Company presents Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen from 23 to 30 September, and you can book here.

Main picture: Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle star in the BBC’s Pride and Prejudice back in 1995.
