Chinese New Year celebrations coming to Westside on Thursday 26 January

If you’re out and about on Westside tomorrow afternoon, keep your eyes peeled for Chinese dancers celebrating the new lunar year.

A giant lion will be on a dancing tour of various venues across the district from 2pm to 4pm on Thursday 26 January to bless the Year of the Rabbit.

The lion starts outside the Library of Birmingham on Centenary Square, then visits the Rep Theatre, the ICC, Craft and the Arena before dancing along the canal to Brindleyplace, visiting Café Nero, the Crescent Theatre and ending at Park Regis hotel.

Westside BID will be out and about with our phone camera to capture the dancers at each venue, then live-posting as many clips as we can across social media.

Mike Olley, general manager of Westside BID, said: “We are always thrilled to be visited by the Chinese dancers which help to show what an incredibly diverse city Birmingham has become.

“We’d love people to keep an eye out for the dancers and to join in where they can, sharing any pictures and footage @westsidebid on social media.”

The celebrations have been organised by James Wong, chair of Birmingham’s Chinese Festival Committee and managing director of the city’s famous Chung Ying Restaurants.

Mr Wong said: “It’s great to be able to outreach to different parts of the city and we cannot wait to bring our festivities to as many spectators as possible.”
