Westside BID has paid tribute to a key figure in the city’s entertainment district who has sadly passed away, aged 68.
Chris Baldock was general manager at Symphony Hall from its opening in 1991, and held senior roles within the organisation for 25 years until his retirement in 2016.
The B:Music charity, which runs Symphony Hall, announced that Chris passed away on October 22 following a long illness.
B:Music said in tribute: “Chris was a kind and well-respected individual whose placid exterior belied a deep passion for the arts
“He was never happier than when bringing major international names or inspiring new artists to Britain’s finest concert hall.”
Chris had enjoyed previous experience at Brighton Centre, Cornwall Colosseum and Derby Assembly Rooms before arriving in Birmingham 30 years ago.
B:Music said that, although quiet and private, Chris loved to be around creators and others who shared his passion for music.
Under his tenure the redeveloped Town Hall and Symphony Hall booked numerous legendary acts and grew in stature as iconic music venues.
Added B:Music: “If his mission had been to make Birmingham a greater cultural centre and hub for the finest music, in his 25 years here he more than succeeded.
“B:Music is indebted to Chris for his long service, dedication and skill in building the contemporary music programme that forms such an important part of our work. It continues to delight thousands of visitors every year and supports our ambition as a music charity.”
Westside BID general manager Mike Olley said: “Chris was an integral part of the music scene in Birmingham for many years and played a huge role in developing the city as a leading entertainment centre that we can rightly be proud of.
“He will be sadly missed and all our thoughts at the BID go out to his family.”
Chris is survived by his wife, Debbie, and daughters Kathryn and Sarah.
