The Birmingham Rep’s production of ‘What’s New Pussycat?’ is delightfully absurd, agreeable and seductive, driven by a high-energy, well-drilled and exceptional cast.
The show, which runs to 14 November, got a full house on its feet applauding with genuine delight on the night I was in the audience. It’s not only worth seeing, but also a spectacular and certainly not to be missed.
The Birmingham Rep is by any measure a stunning theatre. Add to that a set that is breath taking in aesthetics and works so well, and you soon believe that you are a part of every scene.
The music of Tom Jones 1960s hits will have you swinging your hips in your seat from start to finish, and the quality of the acting and singing is sensational.
I was taken aback by the power and clarity of all cast members, yet Lady Bellaston (Kelly Price) did it for me, as her voice is amazing.
Tucked away in the ensemble is my pick of the night Carrie Willis. She just didn’t stop entertaining in the background. But how unfair to single two of the cast out. There simply was not an average performer on the stage, as they all performed majestically.
And what a climax! The audience erupted with delight as the whole play fell beautifully and so easily together. I looked around the auditorium and every paying punter was on their feet swinging and jiving with delight.
The only downside of the night was I missed Walsall FC smash Leyton Orient 1-3 away from home.
