Commemorate our armed forces on Westside this weekend

Veterans and existing military personnel are preparing to come together on Westside this weekend for the annual Armed Forces Day service.

The Remembrance event, to be held in Central Square, Brindleyplace, on Saturday 29th, is organised annually by Westside BID and the Greater Birmingham branch of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.

The annual event will commence at 10am with a range of activities, entertainment and stalls, before the standard bearers, serving military personnel and veterans form up at around 10.20am.

There will then be a march to Central Square before the Armed Forces Day service takes place at 11am.

A spokesperson for the event said the commemoration was both an act of Remembrance and an opportunity to thank and honour the armed services in this country.

“So, come and support all our armed forces, past, present, future, British and Commonwealth.”

Armed Forces Day, which commemorates the service of men and women in the British military, began as Veterans’ Day in 2006 before changing its name three years later.

SSAFA was originally founded in 1885, but changed its name in 1919 following the founding of the Royal Air Force, thus becoming the Soldiers’ Sailors’ and Airmen’s Families Association.

Watch out for our report, video and pictures from the event early next week.
