A colourful dance spectacular has opened on Westside – as these stunning new production photos illustrate.
The exhilarating UK premiere of Bhangra Nation – A New Musical has opened at The Rep theatre in Centenary Square, with audiences having plenty more opportunities to see the show before the run ends on 16 March.
The images capture the sheer energy and joy of this ground-breaking musical theatre production, which has Bhangra dancing at its heart.
Presented by Birmingham Rep in association with Mara Isaacs, Tom Kirdahy and Peggy Koenig, the show tells the story of the Uni Bhangra dance team as they wait nervously backstage to find out if they’ve made it to the Nationals.
But while they wait. team-mates Preeti and Mary clash over what Bhangra really means to them. And when a huge row changes the team forever, Preeti and Mary find themselves starting on journeys of discovery into what they stand for and who they want to be.
Bhangra Nation is described as a moving and funny musical about friendship, family and identity, brought to life with incredible dance moves and an outstanding soundtrack.
Sean Foley, artistic director at The Rep, described the new show as a “feel-good new musical” which was rightly being staged in a city with a claim to being the modern centre of Bhangra.
Tony Award-winning producers Mara Isaacs (Hadestown) and Tom Kirdahy (Hadestown and The Inheritance) said the musical was a “joyful, exuberant celebration of Bhangra and a deeply felt exploration of identity and community among young people finding their own way forward in the world.
