It’s never too early to start planning for Christmas, and the Birmingham Repertory Theatre has two treats coming up this winter.
The Rep is hoping to entice visitors with two heart-warming productions aimed at providing audiences with a joyful glow over several weeks either side of the big day.
The Rep be staging A Christmas Carol – A Ghost Story from Thursday 14 November to Sunday 5 January 2025. The theatre then follows that by welcoming families back to watch The Snowman from Thursday 9 January to Sunday 12 January next year.
A Christmas Carol – A Ghost Story is Mark Gatiss’ supernatural stage adaptation of the Charles Dickens’ classic story, which comes to Birmingham after a sell-out London season last year.
Mark, whose acting and writing credits include Doctor Who, directed The Rep’s 2023 co-production of The Way Old Friends Do. His adaptation of A Christmas Carol is described as “a powerful story of life, love, loss and friendship as relevant today as when it was first published 179 years ago”.
The Rep’s production of The Snowman, based on the book by Raymond Briggs and the film directed by Dianne Jackson and produced by John Coates, has been thrilling audiences around the world since first appearing on the Birmingham theatre’s main stage in 1993.It last visited The Rep in 2022.
Sean Foley, artistic director at The Rep, said: “In December we have the truly magical A Christmas Carol. Adapted by Mark Gatiss from Dickens’ brilliant masterpiece about the true spirit of Christmas, this production is a supernatural theatrical extravaganza that has thrilled audiences in Nottingham and London with its stagecraft and storytelling.
“And we’re just as delighted to welcome The Snowman back home. This fabulous dance led re-telling of the Raymond Briggs classic will enchant children of every age, as the Snowman comes to life and flies to the North Pole.
“The Rep’s very own stage version of this beloved story has been bringing joy at Christmas for over 30 years. We are looking forward to welcoming audiences, new and returning, to enjoy the very best of family theatre this Christmas at The Rep.”
