VIDEO: steel drums celebrate National Windrush Day on Westside

Dozens of people gathered on Brindleyplace to celebrate National Windrush Day to the wonderful tunes of steel pan drums.

Westside BID organised the event yesterday afternoon which saw people sampling delicious samples of food from the menu of Caribbean restaurant Turtle Bay.

And passers by danced with joy as they enjoyed the tropical sounds played by the Steeldrumbands. Watch our video of the event here:

National Windrush Day is held on 22 June every year to acknowledge the sacrifices of the British Caribbean communities, and to celebrate how they have helped to shape modern Britain.

This year marked the 75th anniversary of the HMT Empire Windrush arriving at Tilbury docks in Britain on 22 June 1948 with more than 1,000 passengers from the Caribbean. This was one of the first large groups of post-war West Indian immigrants to the United Kingdom.

Luisa Huggins, media and communications manager at Westside BID said: “It was so encouraging to see how Birmingham as a whole responded positively to the day’s events.

“t was wonderful to watch people walking by dancing with their beaming smiles while the skilled steel pan drum musicians played.

“People also had very open conversations and shared stories about their connection with the Windrush era. Overall it was a great event”.
