Ikon set to showcase photo collection of migrants called A Gift to Birmingham

A photographic exhibition of migrant communities in Birmingham taken by renowned photographer Vanley Burke is to be showcased at the Ikon Gallery on Westside.

The collection called A Gift to Birmingham opens on 23 March and features seventeen portraits of members of Migrant Voice, a migrant-led national organisation with a hub in Birmingham

Vanley Burke portrayed participants in their natural environments, including their homes, community centres and parks, across the inner city.

A Gift to Birmingham was commissioned as part of a project led by Dr Reza Gholami, deputy director of the Centre for Research in Race and Education at the University of Birmingham.

Dr Gholami explained that each image tells a story of migration, either recent or long ago, with the whole display presenting a portrait of Birmingham as a super diverse city.

He said: “This exhibition is a fantastic way for people learn more about and engage with our work.”

Mike Olley, general manager of Westside BID, said: “We are very proud to see this wonderful collection of real lives that came to further enrich our city on show at the Ikon and would encourage everyone to come to view it.”

A Gift to Birmingham is a free exhibition with no need to book that runs from 23 March to 3 April 2022. For more details go to https://www.ikon-gallery.org/event/showcase-a-gift-to-birmingham/.
