Westside BID ‘trusts in Boris’ and welcomes early lifting of Covid-19 restrictions

Westside BID today appeared on BBC radio to welcome prime minister Boris Johnson’s early lifting of Covid-19 restrictions, providing a boost to the hospitality sector.

BBC WM radio presenter Kath Stanczyszyn was discussing the news that restrictions, which had been due to expire on 24 March, could end a month sooner if the data continues to be encouraging.

It means in just over two weeks England could be returned to levels of freedom enjoyed before the pandemic, for the first time since restrictions were brought in almost two years ago.

Mike Olley, general manager of Westside BID, said that despite Johnson’s recent muddles in Parliament he was “prepared to trust him” on this matter and “welcomed” the move.

But he stressed the need for everyone coming to enjoy Broad Street’s night life to still take precautions to prevent any new spread of the pandemic.

Mr Olley said: “I welcome this move. I recognise that this is a time of acute danger for the prime minister but I am prepared to trust him on the lifting of restrictions.

“I also endorse his warning that there is still a need to take precautions – wearing masks in crowded places, not coming out if you’ve got Covid and washing your hands.

“We need to be nice to our fellow man and woman and people are more acutely aware of this need to keep our standards high to keep Covid away.

“But there is no real need to keep other restrictions as the hospitality sector has been hit really hard and it will be good to get back to normal.”
