Westside hosts story of migrant’s life in red-light district of Birmingham

A book describing life as a migrant living in a red-light district in Birmingham in the 1980s and 1990s is being launched on Westside this Friday.

Booklovers can attend the event either in person at the Ikon Gallery in Oozells Square or via live streaming on YouTube.

The launch of The Go-Between is from 6pm and 7.30pm on Friday 28 January and will see multidisciplinary artist Osman Yousefzada discuss his memoir with Sara Wajid, co-chief executive of Birmingham Museums Trust.

Osman’s book describes the adult world as seen through his eyes as a child. It includes his own devout Pakistani-Afghan Pashtun community and its divide between the world of men and women.

The Go-Between explores how children balance Western school teachings with cultural traditions, touching on strict gender roles and honour-based violence.

The launch event, which includes a book signing, is free although there is a suggested donation of £5. Booking to attend is essential or to watch online people must subscribe to Ikon Gallery’s YouTube channel.

Ikon presented Osman’s first solo exhibition, Being Somewhere Else, in 2018 and most recently worked with him to present Infinity Pattern 1, a new large-scale installation which covers the entire Selfridges Birmingham building.
