Local media cover Westside ‘spiking’ roundtable between clubs, police, students and MPs

Leading nightclub managers on Westside have met with students, police and local MPs to discuss precautionary measures to keep clubbers safe from ‘spiking’.

Birmingham Live – the online sister of the Birmingham Mail newspaper – reported how Edgbaston MP Preet Kaur Gill organised the meeting at Velvet Music Rooms, on Broad Street, attended by managers from nearby Pryzm and Popworld nightclubs.

Also taking part were Westside BID, West Midlands Police and representatives of the University of Birmingham and the university’s Guild of Students.

During the meeting, city centre nightclubs had the opportunity to explain the safety measures that have been recently strengthened, including additional security checks, staff training with West Midlands Police, offering drink covers and spiking test kits.

Matthew Symes, Pubwatch chairman for Westside area, said: “We welcome the input from organisations like the student guild, police, council and others in creating a community approach to current policies and also creating new ways of improving what is already in place.”

Ms Gill said: ” I was extremely encouraged to hear about the positive steps being taken to address this issue. Those attending the roundtable agreed on actions that needed to be taken to continue this forward momentum.

“However, we can all take simple steps to ensure our own safety including being more cautious in the amount of alcohol we consume on a night out.” Read the full story here: https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midlands-news/night-club-managers-meet-west-22219592
