Hundreds gather to help commemorate Armed Forces Day on Westside

Hundreds of veterans, existing military personnel and military cadets came together on Westside at the weekend for the annual Armed Forces Day service.

The Remembrance event, held in Central Square in Brindleyplace on Saturday 29 June, was organised by Westside BID and the Greater Birmingham branch of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.

Scores of people watched as young standard-bearers from the Military Preparation College for Training (MPCT) marched into the square, with formal salutes taken for the Royal Navy, Army, RAF and Royal Marine Commandos.

Veterans stood proudly at attention and the cadets silently bowed their heads in an impressive mark of respect.

There were also veterans present who represented Commonwealth forces from around the world.

Elaine Weir, business liaison manager at Westside BID, said: “It was an honour to help organise this event which was  both an act of Remembrance and an opportunity to thank and honour the armed services in this country.”

Earlier in the day, there had been several stalls and activities for the people to enjoy, including volunteers who explained how Birmingham citizens had coped with bomb raids in the city during World War II.

Everyone also enjoyed a performance by women who dressed as military entertainers and sang wartime songs.
