Birmingham’s winter arts scene is set to get more personal this February with a unique participatory artwork as part of the Birmingham Light Festival 2026, which takes place from the 12th – 15th February.
Titled The Heartbeat of Brindleyplace, the installation will feature a series of softly glowing light boxes in Oozells Square located on Westside — each one powered by the real-time heartbeats of local people.
Festival organisers are inviting people with meaningful connections to Brindleyplace to apply to take part. Successful applicants will meet the artist ahead of the festival to receive a specially coded wristband. Worn each evening from the 12th–15th February 2026, the wristband will transmit the wearer’s heartbeat live to their corresponding light box on display throughout the festival.
Accompanying each light will be a name and personal story, linking individuals to this visually striking public artwork.
The invitation forms part of this year’s celebration of public art across Birmingham, with installations set to animate city spaces as part of a programme of illuminated works and events during Valentine’s weekend.
