A planned music festival due to take place on Westside over the August Bank Holiday has been called off.
But music fans will still be able to see two of the scheduled bands performing at alternative local venues.
The Centenary Square Summer Series was scheduled to take place on Bank Holiday weekend, from 23 to 26 August, headlined by Birmingham bands The Streets and Ocean Colour Scene, as well as Jungle and Cian Ducrot.
But the official website for the council-backed event has now announced that the four-day festival has been scrapped.
Under the heading of ‘Important Information’, the website says that The Streets, who were due to open the festival in Centenary Square on Friday 23 August, will now perform at the O2 Academy in Bristol Street, while London-based band Jungle will appear at Westside’s Utilita Arena on Saturday 24 August.
Jungle will still be supported at Utilita by Birmingham-born neo-soul musician Ella More and US multi-disciplinary artist METTE, who has appeared on BBC’s Later with Jools Holland show.
However, the gigs by Irish singer-songwriter Cian Ducrot on 25 August and Ocean Colour Scene on 26 August have both been cancelled.
A message on the Centenary Square Summer Series website said that “despite our best efforts”, rescheduling for the cancelled shows was “not possible at this time”.
It said ticket holders will receive a full refund automatically from their point of purchase, so there is no need to contact the event organiser.
The message concluded: “We apologise for any inconvenience and disappointment this has caused.”
As far as The Streets and Jungle concerts are concerned, organisers say all tickets will remain valid for the new venues, and advise customers to look out for an email from their point of purchase.
“We apologise for any inconvenience and hope you can enjoy the show.”
News of the proposed Summer Series was revealed by Westside BID in February after live entertainment company Live Nation applied to Birmingham City Council for a licence to hold live music in Centenary Square, with a capacity of almost 5,000 fans.
Westside BID has approached Live Nation, the city council and Ocean Colour Scene for comment, but at the time of uploading this story no replies had been received.
