Black History Month: Kenya Mcfarlane – Inspiring and Empowering the Next Generation Through Education.

This Black History Month, Westside BID is celebrating the people, voices and experiences that make our community so diverse.

We spoke with Kenya Mcfarlane, who works for Maximus on Westside as an AEB Trainer, specialising in hospitality and business management and also has a degree in Hospitality with Events Management.

Passionate about supporting others, Kenya helps learners develop their skills, build confidence and take steps towards new opportunities.

We spoke to Kenya about her personal journey, the importance of representation, the experiences that have shaped her career and the advice she would give to the next generation.

What is the biggest thing you try to build in your learners?

The biggest thing I try to build in learners is confidence.

I use real-life examples, practical activities, and honest conversations to help people recognise their strengths. I want learners to leave knowing that they are capable, employable and deserving of opportunities.

Why does representation matter?

Representation matters because it helps people see what is possible. When you see someone who looks like you or has had similar experiences succeeding, it makes those goals feel more achievable.

Growing up, there were times when being Black felt like a challenge rather than something just normal. As I’ve got older, I’ve realised that my culture, experiences and background are strengths that shape who I am and how I connect with others.

How have your life experiences shaped your career?

I came to the UK from Jamaica when I was eight years old. At the time, we were on a temporary stay which eventually became an overstay. My mum was determined that her children would get an education, even though our circumstances were complicated.

My mum also had a huge influence on who I am. She faced incredible challenges but never stopped fighting for her children. She always put us first and did everything she could to give us opportunities, even when life was difficult. To me, she is amazing.

Those experiences gave me a real understanding of immigration, disadvantage and the barriers that many people face. They also taught me resilience and empathy.

That’s why I feel so passionate about the work I do today. I understand how much of a difference one person believing in you can make.

What advice would you give to young people?

My advice is… don’t be afraid to ask. So many opportunities in my life came because someone or myself was willing to ask a question, open a door, or give somebody a chance.

I would also tell young people not to let their background define what they believe they can achieve.

Be proud of where you come from. Work hard, stay curious and believe in yourself, even when nobody else does. Your story doesn’t have to be a barrier to success. In many cases, it becomes the reason you’re able to achieve it and help others do the same.

Through her own experiences, Kenya is helping to open doors for others, proving that the right support, encouragement and belief can change someone’s future. By inspiring the next generation of learners to recognise their potential, she is helping build a future where opportunity has no barriers.
