People can celebrate the achievements of Birmingham’s African Caribbean pioneers by taking part in a special city walk this weekend.
Westside BID is sponsoring the Let’s Walk & Learn event hosted by the Canal & River Trust West Midlands to celebrate Black History Month.
The three-mile walk, which is free to join, sets off from Roundhouse Birmingham in Sheepcote Street at 1.30pm on Sunday 27 October.
Led by local historians, the walk will cover canal towpaths as well as roads, and includes various breaks for information to be given.
Let’s Walk & Learn also involves Black Heritage Walks Network, which was set up in 2018 to highlight the achievements of the African Caribbean community in the UK.
In particular, it wanted to capture the stories and history of the Windrush generation in Handsworth to mark the 70th anniversary of the Empire Windrush ship bringing passengers from the Caribbean to the UK.
Black Heritage Walks Network created a series of black heritage trails across the West Midlands as part of its aim to document migration stories and achievements of the black community in the UK, in particular the post-war period.
Luisa Huggins, communications manager at Westside BID, said: “This is a special walk organised as part of Black History Month in order to celebrate the achievements of Birmingham’s black pioneers. We hope that people will come forward so all the available places on the walk will be filled.”
The walk has been limited to just 20 spaces. Full details are on the poster below, and anyone interested in signing up can do so on this link.
