Birmingham Mail: how Westside wardens will keep nightlife customers safe on busy Halloween weekend

A local newspaper found out how Westside wardens will be stepping up their presence on Birmingham’s ‘golden mile’ this Halloween weekend following recent reports of “needle spiking” and drinks being drugged.

Senior warden Pete Willis suggested that while some customers might just “think” they’ve been spiked because of recent media reports, he and his colleagues were very aware of the danger and would be “hyper” alert.

Mr Willis, in an interview with BirminghamLive (the online sister of the Birmingham Mail) said: “A lot of people will basically drink too much and they’ll associate the feeling of drinking too much with the last time they did it, and if they feel a bit different they might think they’ve been spiked.

“People are hyper aware at the moment so they are taking steps to protect themselves. I think the authorities are also hyper aware and responding accordingly.

“I’ve reminded all wardens of the things we’re looking out for. We are expecting Halloween to be very busy – traditionally it’s just as busy as New Year’s Eve. We’ll be increasing our numbers. There will be more wardens out, more police – everyone is doing everything they can.”
