VIDEO & PICTURES: Enjoy Westside’s magical twilight

It’s time to celebrate the best of Westside with our special video which illustrates the sheer joy of being in the area when there’s a magical twilight. Take just 100 seconds to watch it here:

The experience is never better than at this time of the year, when the low sun enriches every colour to the maximum in the late afternoon.

The best viewing point is from the main terrace of the Library of Birmingham, especially while it looks down over the festive light displays of the annual Ice Skate Birmingham extravaganza.

There are just a handful of opportunities left this year to get up on to the terrace to enjoy these stunning twilight views. That’s because the library is only ever open until 7pm on Mondays and Tuesdays, and is closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays. Because of how Christmas falls, the library also closes early at 5pm on Tuesdays 24 and 31 December, while Ice Skate Birmingham ends its run on Sunday 5 January.

This all means that the only a handful of days left to try to catch the most colourful twilight views from the terrace on Mondays 16, 23 and 30 December, and Tuesdays 10 and 17 December. Check the weather forecasts for those days and, if you get the chance, head for the heights to enjoy the sights, and maybe even snap a picture!

This year’s lights on Westside really are the best yet at ground level too, with even the trees in Centenary Square illuminated.

Walk across Centenary Square, and you can’t help but be bewitched by the colours all around you.

Glance skywards, and you can almost feel dizzy just watching the Big Wheel and Flyer whizzing around in the last light of day.
