Two recent productions at The Rep theatre have been recognised in this year’s prestigious UK Theatre Awards, celebrating the very best of British stage productions.
The shortlistings come as the theatre announced that former regional mayor Andy Street is to become its new chair from 1 November.
The Centenary Square venue is in the running to lift the award for Best Design and Best Performance in a Musical. The winners to be announced at a glittering ceremony in London on Sunday 20 October, hosted by former Steps singer turned actress Faye Tozer.
In the Best Design category, Michael Taylor has been nominated for his set design on hit musical Bhangra Nation. This was brought to life thanks to The Rep’s set and prop building, scenic art, wardrobe and technical workshops.
Meanwhile, Tony Award-winner Matt Doyle has been nominated for Best Performance in a Musical for his role as the legendary artist Frank Sinatra, in Sinatra: The Musical. This was produced by Birmingham Rep in association with Universal Music Group Theatrical and Frank Sinatra Enterprises.
The Rep has been further recognised in the Best New Play category, with the Birmingham theatre’s deputy artistic director Madeleine Kludje having directed Swim, Aunty, Swim! at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry.

Michael Taylor said: “I’m thrilled about the nomination, and it’s a great tribute to the brilliant team at the Rep. Bhangra Nation was a beautiful show to work on.”
And Matt Doyle said he was “floored and honoured” to have received his nomination, adding: “Sinatra: The Musical is on my mind every day. I strive to continue to honour Frank’s immense legacy with the support and guidance of the incredible Tina Sinatra.
“I cannot wait to return to the fantastic show we all created at The Rep.”
