Young Bayern Munich fan Pascal Trierscheid found himself on Broad Street yesterday afternoon, and was soon sitting on Westside’s famous Black Sabbath Bench.
Pascal hadn’t even been born in 1982, but he knew that the first meeting between Aston Villa and Bayern since the German giants lost 1-0 in the European Cup Final in Rotterdam 42 years ago was a game for all ages.
“We were lucky that our cards were drawn out for this game,” said Pascal, an office worker who lives in Cologne. “We know how big it is – so here we are really looking forward to the match.”
Alas for Pascal, Bayern lost their game at Villa 1-0 with a goal from Jhon Durán in the 79th minute. Incredibly, it was scored in front of Peter Withe, the former Villa No 9 who had scored the winner in the 67th minute of that 1982 final.
The Black Sabbath Bench is always attracting tourists from abroad, with Lille fans visiting earlier this year and a Polish couple flying all the way to the city to wish Ozzy a happy 75th birthday last year.
