Chance to run historic canal-side pub in Westside

One of Birmingham’s most picturesque cask ale pubs has become available to run as a fixed term tenancy.

Industry giant Stonegate Pub Company is behind the offer for the historic grade ll listed Tap & Spile, which is situated in two buildings dating back to 1821.

The pub, which was listed in 1981, has two bars and two entrances, one on Gas Street close to Broad Street, and the other alongside the canal overlooking Gas Street Basin.

Stonegate Pub Partner’s regional manager says: “The Tap & Spile is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced operator to take on a busy, well-established pub

“Due to the location, there is plenty of trade to capture due to its prime positioning. The pub is popular with locals and those from the nearby offices who visit frequently for the quality food and drinks offers and its live music.”

The Tap & Spile (‘spile’ comes from the word for a peg in a cask of ale) has 30 covers in the ground floor bar, which resembles a narrowboat, and 40 in the restaurant area, plus a top floor bar with another 40 covers and space for live music events.

The canal towpath area has seating for a further 40 covers, offering stunning views of narrowboats and buildings such as the Hyatt Hotel.

Stonegate Pub Partners’ business listing says: ‘We are now seeking an experienced operator who has catering skills to continue the established trade. Due to the pub’s late-night license, entertainment is a key driver here so the new publican should look to continue this.

‘Previous experience of running a pub will help you along but it’s not essential. Any experience of running your own business and managing accounts, profit and loss, and stock control, will also help you.

‘More importantly, we recognise passion, ambition, vision and commitment in our Pub Partners. We offer a wide range of support and training services to help both new and experienced partners make their business a success’.

The pub, which has a forecast turnover of £741,374, also has three-bedroomed private accommodation spread across two floors.
