Retired dentist strikes again in BID’s calendar

Success can become something of a habit. And so if it’s April, it must be a month for Damien Walmsley!

The retired dentist has followed up his appearance in Westside BID’s 2023 calendar with another prized place this year – and both were for the month of April.

Damien, aged 65, from Knowle, Solihull, returned to one of his favourite haunts – the Gas Street canal basin – for his latest eye-catching, and prize-winning image.

In 2023, it was his stunning photo of the Bistrot Pierre restaurant, reflecting on the water of the canal, which not only earned him a place in the calendar but was also chosen worthy of adorning the front cover.

This year, he has had to ‘settle’ for representing April for the second year in succession after returning to Gas Street to take this image of a cruise boat on the canal.

Damien, who wins £100 in vouchers to spend locally, said: “I was very pleased to be in the calendar for a second time. I took the picture from one of my favourite places, the Gas Street Basin, standing with my back to the Tap and Spile pub. We are very lucky in Birmingham to have so many lovely places to photograph.”

Damien, who is Emeritus Professor of Dentistry at the University of Birmingham, said he had always been a keen photographer, and is now enjoying competition success, spurred on by last year’s BID calendar joy.

“I have done well in other competitions. It started off with the BID calendar, and I’ve since done very well during the rest of last year.”

He is now looking forward to spending the fruits of his latest success, after choosing Odeon cinema tickets for his £100 winning voucher, with the latest releases awaiting him at Odeon Broadway Plaza.
