Huge film savings at Cineworld with giant screen festival and action season

It can cost up to £16.69 to see new releases like Dune at peak time on the giant IMAX screen at Cineworld Broad Street.

But the return of the cinema’s annual IMAX Film Festival in April means movie lovers can book to see up to four of the best IMAX movies of the past year for just £3 each.

They including the cream of the crop, with Oppenheimer starring this year’s best actor Oscar winner Cillian Murphy in the Academy Awards’ best picture winner directed by Christopher Nolan.

Oppenheimer.

Cillian, of course, has been a guest at the 12-screen multiplex three times over the years for premieres of Peaky Blinders so visitors will literally be following in his footsteps up to the IMAX screen.

Each £3 ticket is more than 80 per cent cheaper than the maximum peak-time price for new releases. Or, if you’ve got the stamina to sit through almost ten hours worth of entertainment, it would cost you £12 to see all four films instead of more than £65 when they were first released. Buy your festival tickets here.

Either way, the price crash could allow you to spend your savings on Westside by visiting the huge range of bars, pubs and clubs on Broad Street and across the wider Brindleyplace, Gas Street Basin and Broadway Plaza areas.

The four films showing in the IMAX Film Festival on Saturday 20 April are:

  • The Super Mario Bros. Movie (PG, 92 mins)
  • Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (PG, 140 mins)
  • Oppenheimer (15, 180 mins)
  • Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (12A, 157 mins).

Cineworld is also launching a new ‘action season’ with actors including Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock, Nicolas Cage, Sean Connery, Sylvester Stallone, Tom Hardy and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The April line-up of six action movies showing at 7.30pm, with ticket prices pegged at just £5, includes:

  • Predator (15, 107 mins) – Wednesday, 3
  • Speed (15, 116mins) – Saturday, 6
  • The Rock (15, 136 mins) – Thursday, 11
  • Demolition Man (15, 114 mins) – Monday, 15
  • Max Max: Fury Road (15, 130 mins) – Monday, 22
  • Commando (18, 88 mins) – Monday, 29
Mad Max: Fury Road

Should you prefer to have a laugh on April Fool’s Day, there are two comedies screening on Monday 1 April – The Naked Gun (15, 85 mins, 6pm) and Dumb And Dumber (12A, 106 mins, 8.30pm). Again, tickets are £5 per film.

So you could see all eight of those action movies and comedies combined for £40.

A proud moment: my photograph of Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Knight with star actor Tom Hardy (Fury Road), taken at the 2014 Cineworld Broad Street premiere of their movie Locke, is part of the cinema’s giant mural at the top of the escalators.
