People in and around Westside are putting their best feet forward today (23 October) in support of the ongoing Black History Month celebrations.
The Canal & River Trust West Midlands and the Black Heritage Walks Network combined to organise the free walk to help mark the special month, and all 20 places have now been filled.
The Let’s Walk event, led by local historians, will cover a distance of approximately three miles, starting from Roundhouse Birmingham in Sheepcote Street at 11am and finishing approximately two hours later.
Participants will then be sharing mouthwatering Caribbean cuisine at the Turtle Bay restaurant in Brindleyplace, courtesy of Westside BID.
A spokesperson for the event said: “Black Heritage Walks Network has researched and created a series of black heritage trails across the West Midlands.
“We aim to document migration stories and achievements of the black community in the UK, in particular, the post-war African Caribbean community. This enables us to inform and educate local communities about the contribution of the black community within the UK.”
Black Heritage Walks Network was formed in 2018 to highlight the achievements of the African Caribbean community in Britain.
The founders researched the initial Madiba Walk in order to capture the stories and history of the Windrush generation in Handsworth to mark the 70th anniversary of the HMT Windrush carrying passengers from the Caribbean.
Luisa Huggins, Westside BID’s media and communications manager, said: “We are thrilled to be celebrating Black History Month on Westside by partnering with the Canal and River Trust.
“Westside is an incredibly diverse place, so it’s important that we acknowledge and celebrate all cultures.”
