Westside BID has paid tribute to Matt Knight, venue manager at The Exchange, who passed away following a short illness at the end of last year.
Matt was one of the main drivers behind the opening and growth in the popularity of The Exchange, the University of Birmingham’s engagement, knowledge and skills hub on Broad Street.
Mike Olley, general manager of Westside BID, said: “Matt was an energetic, considerate fellow. I met him, got to know him and liked him from his role as the general manager at The Exchange.
“Always when someone is taken at such a youthful time, it impacts in a colder, harsher manner. I’m genuinely taken aback and saddened by Matt’s passing.
“He was full of life, was giving so much and would have given so much more. He was a great ambassador for my university on Broad Street and I’m really saddened he won’t be there any longer to share life.
“For those a lot closer to him than I was, I offer my deep sincere condolences. We have all lost a great guy.”

The Conference and Events team at the University of Birmingham announced Matt’s death on 8 December last year.
A spokesperson for the Conference and Events team said: “With great sadness, we announce the death of The Exchange’s venue manager, Matt Knight, following a short illness.
“Matt was instrumental in opening The Exchange, building a solid team, and establishing links with city-centre businesses. Cheerful and friendly, Matt was always willing to go the extra mile for his colleagues.
“A vegan who cycled everywhere and cared passionately about healthy living and sustainability, he will be greatly missed by everyone at The Exchange and in the wider University of Birmingham community. Our thoughts are with his family.”
Matt’s family and friends attended a ceremony at Waseley Hills crematorium on 5 January, followed by a celebration of his life at The Exchange. Donations in Matt’s memory were made to Cancer Research UK, Guide Dogs UK, The Donkey Sanctuary and The Vegan Society.
