Horse racing fans will be ‘galloping’ to Birmingham’s leading independent Irish bar on Westside as the four-day Cheltenham Festival gets underway this week.
More than a quarter of a million spectators are expected to descend on Cheltenham in Gloucestershire over the next four days for what has been described as the ‘greatest show on turf’.
Many of the fans will be travelling from Ireland, especially as the final day of the festival takes place on St Patrick’s Day on Friday 17 March, which is also when the feature race, the Cheltenham Gold Cup, takes place.
But a large slice of the magic of both Cheltenham and St Patrick’s Day can also be found at Velvet Music Rooms on Broad Street, which is going all things green this week.
Velvet will be screening all 28 races over the four days of the Cheltenham Festival on its giant screens, including the five feature races that includes the Gold Cup and Champion Hurdle.
The racing will be accompanied with commentary and a themed menu throughout the jump festival, from today until Friday 17th.
But the excitement does not stop there, as Velvet will then be following up coverage of Cheltenham with its ‘St Patrick’s Weekender’, which takes place from March 17 to 19.
The event will feature live music every day, starting with the Needless Band at 8pm on Friday 17th, followed by the Push to Play Band at 7pm on Saturday, and the Travelling Riverside Blues Band from 6.30pm on Sunday 19th.
Velvet Music Rooms owner Dani Hadley said: “We’re looking forward to a large influx of Irish visitors over the course of this week, not only for horse-racing fans attracted to the Cheltenham Festival, but also to help celebrate St Patrick’s Day with us. We can promise them a really good craic!”
