Musicians attract crowds to help celebrate Jamaica’s 60th independence day in Brindleyplace

The 60th anniversary of Jamaican independence was celebrated at the weekend with live music entertainment at Water’s Edge in Brindleyplace.

The event was hosted by DJs Elaine and Denco from Genesis Radio Birmingham, with musicians Sweet Pan Band, Roy Forbes and Melika, plus poet Dave Wilkes.

As people walked through the vibrant scene, tasty free patties and Jamaican flags were given out to help celebrate the nation’s culture.

A powerful rendition of the Jamaica national anthem was performed by Melika on her violin and Roy Forbes, while a sizable crowd of people gathered to watch.

Mike Olley, general manager of Westside BID, said: “We were honoured to play a little part in celebrating this landmark celebration by arranging this lovely event. Passers-by just couldn’t help but stop to watch the entertainment and join in!”
