Boating Parade floats through Westside to celebrate Commonwealth Games

Scores of barges and other boats took part in a special Boating Parade on Westside’s canals at the weekend to celebrate this summer’s Commonwealth Games.

The parade on Saturday 25 June was organised by the Canal & River Trust, as part of the Birmingham 2022 Festival.

A total of 75 boats from different parts of the UK were involved in the event, and each one sported unique decorations, showcasing diverse cultures and people.

The parade started at Roundhouse Birmingham, floated onto Sheepcote Street, Brindleyplace, then Gas Street Basin and the Mailbox.

Aaron Atwal, operations manager of the Canal & River Trust, called the event a “Commonwealth Games legacy” and said that more events would be taking place in the near future to highlight the games.

Mike Olley, general manager of Westside BID, said: “We’re so lucky to not only have the canals at the heart of Westside but also the Canal & River Trust who do so much to enhance the area.

“It was wonderful to see this parade of boats celebrating the Commonwealth Games and we look forward to watching more fun on the waterways in the next few months.”

Mr Atwal added that such events could not take place without the help from volunteers, and he encouraged people to get involved with the Canal & River Trust by visiting their website https://canalrivertrust.org.uk.
