The changing face of Westside’s skyline captured on camera

This is the latest shot of the emerging new skyline of Westside that a skilled photographer has posted on social media.

Daniel Sturley’s photography comes as an array of exciting multi-storey developments are forever changing the landscape of Broad Street and Brindleyplace.

Most prominent in the new picture, taken at the weekend, is The Mercian building which towers over neighbouring developments at an impressive 42-storeys.

Formerly known as 2one2 Broad Street, The Mercian is currently nearing completion. Once finished, the £183 million project will boast 481 luxury apartments exclusively for rent, ranging from studios to three-bed residences.

The building, constructed on the former Click Club nightspot, features a 200 metres rooftop running track offering panoramic views of the city skyline.

As Daniel’s photo illustrates, Westside is already well served for upmarket, high-rise living following the recent completion of two other residential towers.

The Bank Towers 1 and 2 are situated on the opposite side of Broad Street’s junction with Sheepcote Street from The Mercian building. Together, the two buildings provide around 400 residential apartments ranging from studios to three-beds.

Tower 1 was completed in May 2018 while its later, and taller neighbour, which is more than 100 metres high, welcomed its first residents in December 2019.

Another eye-catching building, on the left of the photo, is the 12-storey office block called Eleven Brindleyplace, built in 2009, while on the right is the Hampton by Hilton hotel at 200 Broad Street.

Daniel, aged 53, who works for Autism West Midlands as a digital media producer, moved to Birmingham from London 26 years ago. He took his latest photo from the sixth floor of a nearby car park.

He said: “I’ve been living around the back of Brindleyplace for about 13 years and so I have seen all these buildings go up.

“I love this city and to see it develop over the years has been amazing. My special interest is photography, particularly buildings such as new developments and their construction.”

Westside BID general manager Mike Olley said: “We are delighted to see photos of our gradually evolving skyline appearing on social media and elsewhere.

“It demonstrates just how much confidence has been invested in the Broad Street and Brindleyplace area, both in the past and continuing today. This is a real positive which we can focus on as we come out of the pandemic.”
